Keynote Speaker: John Strand
Title: A National Network--What have we learned...


John Strand is a recognized technology industry leader and seasoned executive with both commercial and Government experience.  He is currently the Director, Center for Technology Integration and Program Manager, SensorNet in the Department of Computational Sciences and Engineering, Oak Ridge National Lab.  In this capacity he assists the Lab in developing and managing national technology programs, especially those that address national, urgent domestic initiatives.  The Center’s current focus is Homeland Security, requiring implementation at the local through national levels.   The Center directs applications and operational prototype development in “national testbeds” with ‘user’ participation.  A major Lab development in homeland security is SensorNet—a national program designed to collect, manage, process, and disseminate sensor information to first responders, local emergency managers, and state and federal authorities.

Prior to ORNL John was Chief Operating Officer at TeleHub Technologies and CEO of ChemSource, Inc.  He was also Director of Technology Integration for Sprint where he directed R&D.  He directed and managed the industry's first national deployment of Broadband services to support clients such as the U.S Department of Energy and NASA and also directed development of the telecom industry’s first fully integrated, distributed, object based, CORBA compliant, network and service management system.  He was responsible for Sprint’s ATM and SONET research in the sixth national gigabit network testbed, as well as research in gigabit network management, broadband multimedia applications, advanced optics, ATM standards and specifications development, and voice over ATM.

John is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and has advanced degrees in Engineering and Business from Tulane University.

Keynote Speaker: Mike Horton, CEO Crossbow Tech. Inc.
Title: Commercial Wireless Sensor Networks: Status, Issues and Challenges.


Mike Horton co-founded Crossbow Technology and has served as its President and CEO since its inception. Horton has led Crossbow from its founding product line of digital MEMS accelerometers and tilt sensors to its current market-leading inertial sensor and wireless sensor networking platforms. He has co-authored four patents. Under his leadership, the company's revenue has grown more than 50-fold and became net profitable in 2002. Horton has closed $13 million in venture financing for the company, including Intel Capital, its lead corporate investor. Horton was named one of the Top 100 Innovators in the MIT Technology Review and was named one of The Top 50 Movers and Shakers in high technology by Electronic Business Magazine. He graduated from the University of California-Berkeley with a B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering. He was nominated for the University Medal and won the Warren Y. Dere Design Award.
