SCOPE

Programmable wireless networks based on software defined radio (SDR) or cognitive radio (CR) have profound future impact on both commercial and military wireless communications. A frequency-agile SDR/CR constantly senses the spectrum to detect any change in available frequency bands (or white space). Its radio module is capable of reconfiguring RF and switching to newly-selected frequency bands. In the commercial sector, SDR/CR also makes dynamic spectrum access feasible and promises much more efficient use of radio spectrum. From an application perspective, SDR/CR allows a single radio to provide a wide variety of functions, acting as a cell phone, broadcast receiver, GPS receiver, wireless data terminal, etc. In the military sector, SDR/CR is the core technology for US Department of Defense (DoD)'s Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program, which promises seamless inter-operability among different types of radios across all braches of the armed services.

The focus of this workshop is on networking technologies to inter-connect SDR/CR nodes. Since networking with SDR/CR requires consideration across multiple layers, this workshop invites papers from both communications and networking R&D communities to share recent advances in this important area. We hope this workshop will offer a unique forum for researchers from academia, government and industry to share ideas and disseminate new results so as to accelerate future advances on networking technologies for SDRs.
